THE STORY SO FAR...
Firstly let’s get things straight, we’re not strictly pros or Latin dance champions, we’re just two locals who want to share our love of salsa with the people of Rugby.
Chris was always frustrated that he had to travel out of town for dance classes and he wanted to find a way of bringing things closer to home. So, first things first he needed a partner!
And like many good business propositions, over a beer and a G&T Chris asked his buddy Amy if she would join him on his mission. Luckily, she just happened to be a part time salsa instructor, phew!
And just like that ABC Salsa was born…well sort of! There were many dodgy working titles, including the legendary ‘Rubber Chicken Salsa’, and not to mention what felt like millions of hours of admin and training behind the scenes to get things up and running.
By late 2017 we were ready to open the doors at Cawston Community Hall for a few taster sessions and kicked off officially for weekly Sunday night classes in January 2018. By the spring we had both beginner and intermediate classes up and running and were on the hunt for venue number two.
Summer 2018 saw us head to The Barn in Houlton for our midweek Wednesday night slot and by the end of the year we had both levels running at both venues. So what better way to end the year than to hit the town for a Christmas and first birthday celebration with our awesome students.
Classes continued and 2019 saw us add a number of special workshops to our calendar including Salsacise, Rueda and Bachata. It also saw us hit the road to various social events across the country, we even managed to tread the boards of the legendary Blackpool Tower Ballroom!
A little closer to home, we were chuffed to be approached to take part in a charity event for the Friends of St. Cross Hospital here in Rugby. And, with a little help from our ‘Men in Black and Ladies in Red’ we put on a show with ‘The Charity Chunk’ in November 2019 to help raise nearly £4000 for a fantastic local cause.
January 2020 saw us kick start the year with a new course structure and things seemed to be going from strength to strength…and then Coronavirus happened! So, classes were postponed and as we all adjusted to life in lockdown we decided bring our little ABC Salsa community together virtually via Zoom. And that almost brings you all up to date!
The fab news is we're back! After 25 long weeks of watching and waiting, prepping and planning, we were finally given the go ahead to return to Cawston Community Hall for some Sunday Salsacise sessions. Yes, things will be very different and partner work and social dancing still feel a long way off, but the good news is we can put away the laptop and actually venture outside to see our awesome students once again!
